It pounds . . . and then it
undulates . . . then it starts to rift and sway. . . then it
reconnects . . . and then it
surprises and shifts into
something oddly unexpected.
And it always keeps trucking
down that road.”
It first started in 2004 when my little SONAR-based songwriting studio was churning out rock/pop. I was getting very bored with the genre and finding it difficult to get singers for the projects. An online buddy, Cass Anawaty, suggested that I make something in the ambient mood and he set me off discovering the spaces between the notes.
After a few tracks I realised that I still wanted to produce pop music, but that it should include influences and beats from all over the world. One day I found myself in Little India in Singapore, buying up boxes of very old Hindi movie soundtracks.
Running through these oldies with the impatient pop sensibilities of a teenager, I realised that here were some classic pop songs. When I started combining them with modern grooves, and my evolving production style, people started asking for more. Eventually the vast amount of material reduced itself to the undulating sonic experience that is Nagraan.
Along the way there have been several studio upgrades, lots of purchases of fabulous plugins and sample sets, all of which have helped to continue to inspire me to create a better sounding album.
I remember when I was growing up in England in the 60’s and 70’s and first started turning on to music. I became drawn in to the complex and deep productions by producers like Alan Parsons and Chris Thomas, then later by Trevor Horn.
I’ve always wanted to give my listeners that same feeling of space and ambience, depth and perspective that those early multi-track recordings gave me. So Nagraan is an album that is as rewarding on headphones as it is on a big pair of very loud speakers. Thank you for buying this CD, and I hope that you will get as much fun out of it as I’ve had making it.
